Local Stirling MSP Evelyn Tweed has praised the staff and management of the Wallace Monument, after a recent visit to the famous landmark.
Completed in 1869, the Monument commemorates the life and history of William Wallace, who came to fame in the Wars of Independence at the end of the 13th Century. He’s perhaps best known for his victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
The Monument, alongside Stirling’s wider tourism industry, has been hit hard by the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. However with vaccination rates increasing and staycation numbers booming, staff have reported a rise in visitor numbers and an increase in the length of average stays in the Stirling area.
Stirling MSP Evelyn Tweed said:
‘The Wallace Monument plays an iconic role in Stirling’s heritage and tourism offering, normally attracting visitors from all over the world. Despite the ongoing travel restrictions, and the resultant effect on international tourism traffic, the Monument continues to move from strength to strength.
‘The gift shop has a great selection of locally produced goods, and it’s really positive to see the Monument play such an integral and coordinated part in Stirling’s wider tourism strategy. The staff members made my visit a thoroughly enjoyable one, and I urge people seeking a unique experience to make sure they spend a few hours at the Monument.’
