LOCAL MSP EVELYN TWEED URGES RESIDENTS TO REPLACE RTS METERS AHEAD OF NATIONAL SWITCH-OFF AT END OF JUNE
Householders across Stirling have been urged to replace older electricity meters which use the Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS), ahead of the national switch-off on the 30th June 2025.
It is estimated that over 2000 RTS meters are still in operation in Stirling. RTS meters use radio signals to switch between peak and off-peak tariffs. The technology is now becoming obsolete, as it is too old to maintain effectively. Meters that haven’t been replaced could become stuck on peak tariffs. Heating and hot water systems connected to these meters may also become permanently stuck on or off, potentially leading to higher bills, or a disrupted service. The SNP has called for an immediate delay to the switch-off or the guarantee of full compensation to consumers.
Electricity suppliers are responsible for replacing RTS meters with smart meters at no additional cost – anyone who thinks they may have an RTS meter should contact their supplier now to book an upgrade, local MSP Evelyn Tweed has said. You can also contact your energy supplier to find out if you have an RTS meter.
Commenting, local MSP Evelyn Tweed said:
“The RTS switch-off takes place on the 30th of June – and it could have real consequences for households that haven’t made the switch. There are many RTS meters still in use in Stirling, and it is important that local people find out if they have one, and arrange for their energy supplier to upgrade it as soon as possible. Replacing these old meters is free, and will prevent unexpected bills or a disrupted supply.
“I’m particularly concerned about vulnerable residents, including our older people who may not be aware of this change. Energy companies have also said that although installation rates of new meters are high, they aren’t high enough. I urge the UK Government and Ofgem to delay or guarantee full compensation to consumers ahead of the planned switch off.
“I encourage everyone in Stirling to replace their RTS meter ahead of switch-off at the end of June. Taking action now could prevent stress further down the line.
