MSP Evelyn Tweed Commends Stirling Community’s Resilience Following Storm Éowyn
Evelyn Tweed, SNP MSP for Stirling, has paid tribute to the residents and emergency workers of Stirling for their unwavering resilience in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn, which struck Stirling and wider Scotland on Friday 24th January.
Storm Éowyn brought unusually high wind speeds to the region, with gusts in Stirling reaching almost 100mph, leading to significant disruptions and structural damage to buildings and power lines. Hundreds of thousands of homes across Scotland were left without power due to the storm, with tens of thousands of these in the Stirling area by the time night fell on Friday.
Throughout the weekend emergency workers, council teams and members of the public have been out all hours attending to affected homes, clearing roads and working through the night to get power back on in the affected areas.
Numerous roads were obstructed due to fallen trees and debris, causing significant travel disruptions and hampering recovery efforts. A number of buildings had roofs damaged, while others in low lying areas experienced flooding. Borestone Primary, Bridge of Allan Primary, Fintry Primary and their nurseries suffered significant damage and continue to be impacted, resulting in them remaining closed on Monday and Tuesday to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Evelyn Tweed said; “Once again the strength and solidarity displayed by our community during a very challenging time has been inspiring. I want to thank each and every individual who has contributed to the recovery efforts. From emergency responders to council workers, volunteers and members of the community including local businesses and charities, the collective effort has been extraordinary.
“Emergency workers, Stirling Council teams, and utility providers have been working tirelessly to assess and address the damage throughout the entire weekend since the storm hit. Local farmers have been helping to clear dangerous debris from streets, while utility companies have been providing welfare vans and essential assistance to those in need.
“While significant progress has been made in recovery efforts, I urge residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. The collective effort of our community is our greatest strength as we rebuild and restore normality across Stirling.”
